“Woah there,” he says softly, one hand darting out to cup the bottom of her glass, the other softly encircling her wrist. “Careful, Penelope.”
He says her name with a British accent but there is something American in the intonation, the way he goes up at the end. It is something Penelope has found herself doing from time to time here, her voice automatically mimicking those around her; she thought it signaled a certain weakness of character, as though she knows herself so little that even her voice cannot hold onto itself.
But from him it just sounds… right.
She likes how he says her name with such familiarity, even though they haven’t been introduced yet. He says it as if they’ve known each other for years.
“This is Colin, obviously,” Eloise says and Penelope nods, unable to speak. He is tall and lithe and his hair falls in dark waves the same colour as Eloise’s. He’s wearing a white T-shirt tucked into high-waisted blue jeans, tan leather cowboy boots and there is a white Stetson perched atop his curls.
