Aziraphale smiled, and pressed a gentle kiss to Crowley’s forehead. “Sit up for me, love?”
Crowley obeyed. A pleasant tingle shivered up Aziraphale’s spine, as he watched Crowley obey the suggestion. While the ‘going into subspace’ ritual was mostly for Crowley, Aziraphale would be lying if he denied getting a certain thrill out of his side of this arrangement. He got to cater to his beloved’s desires, to take care of him, make him feel warm and safe and cherished and loved, in such an intense and all-encompassing way.
If this ritual provided Crowley with safety, it also provided Aziraphale with the opportunity to be a guardian, the way he’d always longed to be.

It was his third time in the Room. It probably wouldn't be the last. He didn't know how long he had to stay, they never say how long the punishment will last. It was part of it: the uncertainty, the constantly smothered hope of being let out, the anguish of never being released. From what Crowley told him, Hell preferred corporal punishment, physical pain, blood flowing, flesh being torn apart, bones broken. Heaven found that dirty. Up there, the preferred toying with your mind, breaking your will, pushing you right to the edge of madness before bringing you back, desperate enough that you'll do anything not to be punished again.

Aziraphale didn’t bother pleading anymore.
He acquiesced the second the door opened, letting in the first light that Aziraphale had seen in… in… he wasn’t sure, he didn’t know how long he’d been in the Void. The door let in the first light that Aziraphale had seen in a very long time, and there was a figure silhouetted in it. Tall, broad, with perfect hair and an impeccably maintained suit. Of course, that could have described half of the angels of Heaven, but there was only one who ever came here.
“Gabriel…” Aziraphale said, and his voice came out as a rasp. He wasn’t sure…
Gabriel stalked into the room and grabbed Aziraphale by his lapels, dragging him into a biting, painful kiss, and Aziraphale gasped at the press of lips, the sudden swipe of tongue and nip of teeth, the touch and the smell and the taste utterly overwhelming after so long with nothing.
Ah. It would be one of those visits.

As all Angels should, Aziraphale loves all of God’s creations, and She had many ones that are easy to love. So, as an immortal, it is impossible to go through existence without feeling the loss of them. The emptiness. There have been a handful of people, animals, even places, that have been lost to time that he has mourned.
But this?
This is a grief that Aziraphale is sure that not even Hell could imagine. A grief that Aziraphale would have believed only came with the feeling of losing one’s Angelic wings in a fall. A grief that he would never experience.
