Your mouth fell open. At the same moment, his gaze found yours, and his smile split wider, stretching from one cheek to the other in something that was almost too large for a human face. Like he had been waiting for exactly this moment and found it every bit as satisfying as he'd imagined.
He reached up and pulled the mask down.
The scar revealed itself slowly. You knew that face. You had tried very hard to disbelief it.
"Miss me yet?" His voice carried the grin in it, light and easy, the way someone speaks when they already know the answer. Like a child who has just unearthed a toy they buried themselves in their backyard, delighted by the finding.
