“Every time I close my eyes, I’m remembering. Faces, voices. People I’ve killed.” Bucky’s voice comes muffled, meat and bone and thermal fabric between the words and Steve’s ears. And the words still land like blows. “I’m a Goddamn plague upon the Earth, Steve. I can’t hurt you again.”
“You won’t. And Hydra won’t ever get near you again.” Steve says it like a spell, like a geas, like he’s gonna bend the fabric of the universe to his will. It’s a vow, binding as anything ever said in front of a priest. “I will raze the Goddamn Earth until Hydra ain’t so much as a Goddamn smear.”
Bucky breathes out, slow and controlled. “I want to believe that.”
Steve leans in and presses chapped lips to the centre of Bucky’s brow. “Believe me.”
***Nine months on the tundra. Nine months, in a world turning, churning, transformed. Nine months with the wolves.

There’s a dame standing at his kitchen sink, is Bucky's first stupid thought. And then his brain kinda wobbles, like the shimmer you see through the hot air rising from a campfire, and Buck realises he’s looking at Steve.
Steve, his back turned, at the sink. Wearing a dress.
Steve turns and picks up the tea towel from the counter, starts drying his hands, eye contact fierce and bright as midday sunlight through the stained glass of a cathedral.
It’s a nice dress. Soft kinda pale green, white lace framing his collarbones and hinted at around the knees, a petticoat layer beneath the skirt. He’s wearing lipstick—it’s a muted pink, pale, the skin of an apple just starting to ripen.
