A taciturn firefighter, Geralt is having a tough summer as arson fires blaze out of control around the city. When Jaskier's house catches fire, Geralt is the one to rescue him, and sparks fly, but so does suspicion. Will Jaskier end up behind bars for a crime he didn't commit? Summary
Cintra is moving past its history of non-human prejudice. After the murder of Prime Minister Calanthe Riannon, sorceress Yennefer z Vengerbergu is installed as the head of Parliament and immediately begins dismantling discriminatory policies disadvantaging non-humans. Calanthe's murderer escapes with no trace.
Three months after that, a young man is found dead; strangled by a chain. Five more people are killed, all by presumably the same chain.
A full nine months past the murder of Calanthe, the Chain-Killer's murder victims are identified as having Siren blood. The investigation is moved from Cintra's Public Safety Major Investigations Unit to the Witchers of Kaer Morhen. Witcher Geralt z Rivii, coincidentally the guardian of the late Prime Minister's granddaughter, takes over the case. He finds out that all six victims visited the same free clinic in downtown Cintra.
Jaskier is the star performer at the Fox and Hound. They sing and dance with an allure that draws clients to empty their pockets with barely a look. They are also, unknowingly, half-siren. And the Chain-Killer has them in his sights.

"What?" Shane snaps when he answers his phone, proud that his voice doesn't waver, but his knees feel like they're about to start shaking.
"Imagine surprise when I see on TV that sweet Shane Hollander threw first punch at that fossil of a man Scott Hunter."
Shane can barely understand Rozanov because his accent is thicker than usual and he immediately wonders if the Russian is drunk dialing Shane.
There's a low, ragged breath in Shane's ear and heat immediately comes to his face, racing down his neck, his chest, and his lower belly starts to simmer.
...Oh. Shane understands the situation entirely now.
