He won't say he's been studying Essek. That word is reserved for their dunamancy and the way they keep their faces buried in books for hours while sitting together, quietly jotting down notes about everything and anything that seems minimally interesting. Essek hasn't been a theme of study as much as he's been the fountain slaking his thirst for knowledge, his teacher and the other half of his soul. If they ever find a different world to look into Caleb has no doubt they'll be entwined there too, the strings making up their beings tangled in too many knots to be separated.
Nevertheless, no matter how much it looks like he's studying Essek, he isn't. Caleb just pays attention because Essek is interesting.

It would have been one thing if it had looked important.
All throughout Aeor, they had found strange glowing pillars, gem encrusted instruments, and at least one obviously cursed sword. And with each one, they had practiced due diligence, spending several long minutes identifying and observing the item in question before ever daring to touch it.
Though, perhaps that was why Caleb’s guard had slipped. After weeks of seeing obvious arcane threats from a mile away, he’d forgotten how important it was to investigate everything, no matter how mundane.

Caleb is struck with a thought– an image really– arriving fully-formed and without warning. The pink of his own thumbs, pressed firmly into lavender skin. Pointed towards a navel, towards each other, his hands would form an arch like that of a temple.
Essek would look so lovely in Caleb’s lap, held close and admired properly.
Three hundred and forty-four seconds.
Caleb has to get out of this hug right now. Essek is trying to say "goodbye, be safe, I will see you soon." Essek’s body is not trying to tell him anything.

“Um, this might be a bit… forward,” he says shortly, “but… if we were to sleep close together, it would help us keep warm throughout the night, too.”

When Essek first pitched this, Caleb was not opposed. The idea of being bound did not arouse him the same way that binding Essek does, but it wasn't abhorrent to him. He was willing to try. He could tell, despite Essek's carefully neutral tone as he asked, that the idea appealed to him very much. Caleb wanted—always wants—to make Essek happy. So, even as Essek assured him that he would not be upset if Caleb refused, Caleb agreed.
Now, Essek sits perched at the end of their bed, grinning wickedly as he unwinds a length of glistening silver silk rope
"Excited?" Caleb teases, raising an eyebrow.
Essek bites his bottom lip, which does nothing to stifle his smile. "Perhaps. Are you?"
"I am intrigued, certainly," Caleb says. "It will be a learning experience one way or another."

Summary
Caleb approaches, but the man doesn't raise his eyes until he is taking a seat right next to him. There is a quick up-and-down, which Caleb is not exactly a stranger to, so he smiles wryly under the attention. "Lythir?" The drow's intonation is slightly lilted, seductive, but the way he says the name betrays some nervousness.
There is a pang in Caleb's chest at the possibility of having to leave without getting to have a conversation, but he shakes his head truthfully. "If you're waiting for someone I can leave." he says, but doesn't move until told to. Lavander eyes pierce through his as if they are trying to find his intention from one sentence.

Or the one where Essek gets stood up on a blind date, but Caleb is there to start a romance that was eventually bound to start burning.
