    Law wasn’t sure of when exactly he heard it for the first time. He didn’t know if it was even said to him or if the Straw Hats had just passed it to each other in a jovial tone. But it went around and it earnt a laugh or a smile, as it always did, and it made Law’s blood boil. Because he knew it wasn’t true and yet, impossibly, his crew didn’t. His own crew didn’t know and held fast to one simple truth:

    Thunderous and overwhelming, the water swallows the deck, rushing up to the trees and covering the sea-strong grass on Merry’s lawn. His crew-mates are laughing, joyous, unafraid even in this storm when –

    A flash of red. A yell turned scream. Terror.

    His captain, dragged overboard by the waves in an instant, Zoro reaching out but collapsing half way through because he was too injured to move, to breathe, to get his captain –

    No one else sees. No one else sees the widening of Luffy’s eyes matched in Zoro’s, the panic as an outstretched arm just misses the railing, as Zoro is too slow, too injured to grab on, the wrenched scream out of Luffy’s throat, drowned by the wind – no one.

    No one but Franky.

    Nami is the best navigator in the world - but the tides of emotions are one thing she has never quite been able to map so well.

    But - with Luffy she thinks she would rather die then fail in her task to help her captain.

    (He has given her a place - navigator - so she must fulfill it.)

    Or:

    Nami helps Luffy work through some stuff after a battle - a true navigator must be able to chart all seas after all, even ones of the mind.

    Between Luffy’s shoulder blades, sits the hoof of the soaring sun, the mark of a slave. Ace can’t breathe, can’t do anything but stare at the brand as the sight burns itself into his memory.

    “I-I told Ace. I-I’m…”

    Ace doesn't let Luffy finish, he removes the shirt entirely, hands shaking.

    “I can’t believe you went and got yourself so hurt without me, do you know how much I worried about you?” The smile he gives doesn’t reach his eyes at all, but it seems to shake Luffy from whatever memory was surfacing. “Troublesome little brother, I missed you so much.”

    Or

    Ace loses two brothers the night of the fire. One to death, and the other to a darkness he might never be able to chase away.
