This pain was punishment. Punishment she deserved. She deserved so much worse. For the pain she had put Zoey and Mira through. She didn’t deserve them. She had lied for years. And years.
But somehow they still love her. Patterns and all. Rumi didn’t deserve them.

After the fight on the train, Rumi returns to the penthouse convinced the only way to save the Honmoon is to remove herself from the equation entirely. Mira and Zoey follow her onto the rooftop and finally discover the truth, neither of them react the way Rumi expects.

“Deep breaths.” Mira said, voice strained but making a solid attempt at soothing.
She was afraid to look up and see them, so instead she looked at the patterns on her hands. Her lungs filled and refilled with air that burned going down. She flexed a hand, digging the sharp points of her claws into her palm experimentally. This was new.
Her fingers were pried back firmly and insistently before she could break the skin.

But the texture of the couch under her sweating palms scratched violently at something that had always been loose in Rumi’s mind. Something in her fingers clung to the ease of hiding next to these two women. Something wanted to howl but was so deeply buried all it could do was bite at its own flesh. Frustration was clawing at the back of the empty hollow feeling. Normally couch time helped. Normally the laughter started to fill her up again. It gave Rumi something to hold onto until she wasn’t drowning.

The rumbling snarl had all three of them freezing in place.
”Uh?” Zoey said very slowly, pulling her hands away from the tiger’s head. He had moved it just out of her reach to press his muzzle closer to Rumi and was staring up at Mira with decidedly less stupidity than he normally did. Worse than all of that his teeth were far bigger than they usually were and they were also decidedly fully bared. “Derpy?”

Rumi closed the bedroom door, locking it behind her. She sighed as she leaned back against the wood, doorknob digging into her back. She took in a deep breath, an ache in her chest as she thought about Zoey's concerned face. She wasn't actively trying to avoid her girlfriends. Really, she wasn't! She was officially past all the secrecy and hiding after what happened at the idol awards. While they had all gotten much better at communicating with one another, six months was admittedly not enough time to completely undo a lifetime of repression. But, Rumi was done with keeping things to herself.
Well, except for the whole acting like a child thing. But, now that she thinks about it, Mira and Zoey could kind of see that for themselves couldn't they? Their adult girlfriend, long time band mate, and fellow demon hunter, also notably a half-demon, acting like a toddler.

Langdon's return, combined with all other factors, is just entirely overwhelming for a woman who feels very miserably and viscerally unseen and unwanted. She now sits in the bathroom with her pants around her ankles and her underwear still on, a sharp thing in her hand, and once she's done the woman who finds her is her worst-case scenario. Baran is not as horrible as she thinks she might be.
