Deceit and the cold didn’t mix. He knew that. That’s why he layered, why he wore gloves, why he rarely left his room or interacted with the others at all. Not that he’d hibernate - as you’d expect him to do, with the cold-blooded shit. No, what happened to him was much worse than just falling asleep.

Rescue Logan and Remus when, during that same dragon raid, they’re kidnapped? Patton and Virgil are already on their way to Dragon Mountain.
But it can only be reached by a dragon. And the only dragon around is the same dragon Patton burned. His name’s Janus. Nobody expected him to agree to help, but he did, and Virgil insists it was to betray them. Maybe so, but Patton hopes Janus’ betrayal will wait until they’re through the Iron Woods. Built to keep humans out and other things in, Patton will need all the help he can get to find Logan and Remus without losing their names or their lives.
As they get trapped in trees, drown in a lake, and almost fall to their deaths way too many times, Patton has to decide who he can trust. His best friend, his enemy who might not be all bad--or himself.

Virgil was used to being a social pariah his whole life. And he told himself he was okay with it, for his greater purpose to help his sacred community. That was how is was for the firstborn children of his family...though all of them were destined for sacrifice eventually.
Call it tradition or having enough bad luck being born a person scheduled to die. It would almost feel noble and necessary and selfless...despite how he was treated by those he was apparently saving. But Virgil made himself accept it, because he knew no other choice.
His only two friends would like a word about that.

“Thank you,” Emile said. “Though I’m sorry to say for Humans it’s... not so easy as it might be for trafficking victims of Allied planets, since first contact hasn’t been established.”
“Oh.” Patton felt a flicker of sadness over his soulmate’s ever-present dread. As always, he wanted to reach out, to shove as much love as possible down the line, to promise that he’d be there soon, he swore he would, just wait a little longer, but he wasn’t sure he could manage it right then. Even with a lifetime of preparing himself to meet whatever made his soulmate so terrified all the time, he didn’t have that much control over his emotions.
He couldn’t even be sure how much fear he was leaking right now.
