If he were still in the habit of keeping a detailed medical logbook, Crocus would have started this past week’s entries with the line: I seem to have lost my little-remaining sanity.
In a span of six days, he’s gone from being alone with Laboon and his lighthouse duties, to a full inundation of teenagers and children claiming to be mentally adults (with hardly a lick of maturity or good manners to be seen), one functioning vessel beside the ramshackle remnants of what essentially amounted to a raft of scrap metal and sailcloth (which of course fell to pieces the moment they came screaming down the long slope of Reverse Mountain), and his own awakened memories of a future which has not yet come to pass, and now likely won’t, thanks to meddling from his aforementioned ‘guests’.
It’s the most entertainment he’s had in years.

It’s not only how full of rage his voice was—it’s how possessive it was, too. Like no one should dare think of breathing in Law’s vicinity. Like no one is allowed to even look at Law other than him. Luffy’s arm covers his waist and their hands intertwine. This wasn’t his plan for this summer break - to trespass to the sunflower field and end up spooned by a beetle-obsessed freshman. But here he is. It’s strangely comfortable.
“Tell me about him.”
__________Every time summer approaches, Law falls into a deep pit. It was during this so-called season of joy that Cora was taken away from him. He knows the drill, but it doesn’t hurt any less.
Except this time around his routine is broken by a blinding smile that could rival the sun. The same sun he despises so much.
The only certainties in life are death and dawn and both are equally daunting.

Law kisses Luffy like it’s both a wound and a prayer, like tearing himself open might somehow keep the light from leaving. Luffy’s laughter spills into the cracks, filling the spaces Law thought would always ache, warmth that is steady and unshaken, like the promise of morning. Somewhere in Luffy’s blinding smile, Law sees Corazon’s ghost: gold slipping into his fractures, whispering, This is what I wanted for you.

In hindsight, the poorly disguised stares of pity that the Straw Hats kept sending his way should have been the first sign that the alliance would be more than he bargained for.
"You gonna betray me?" Straw Hat asks, after his crewmates warn him of the risks involved with pirate alliances. He takes Law's curt 'no' at face value, and beams like he's just been paid the greatest compliment.

It’s a face Law can recognise in his sleep, thing is. Oh, his memory, ever-fallible and ever-cruel, has dulled the details over the years. But when he sees the face again (changed though it may be, paler and hollow-cheeked), in his mind’s eye it snaps once again into perfect clarity. It’s like rereading a passage from a well-loved book – a few sentences in, and you find yourself quoting the rest off by heart.
Or maybe it’s like seeing a ghost.
“Law,” the stranger says, sounding remarkably like he’s also seeing a ghost. Law wonders if he is professionally qualified to diagnose his own psychotic break.
