It always happens once a year like clockwork. She knows her parents postpone resolving all their little arguments and disagreements over the months. And then they let something come along that just ticks both of them off, resulting in a giant snowball of a fight, one where all bets are off.
Which, even at sixteen, Etta knows is just a terrible dispute resolution strategy for functional adults to be following.
And functional adults are how she would like to think of her parents as, for the most part.
But epic love demands an occasional epic fight she guesses.

“I really don’t want her to fucking turn out like me, okay.” He says forcefully, looking at her with an obvious expression on her face.
“Is that really so hard for you to understand?”He looks equal parts frightened and enraged in that moment and Olivia absorbs in the moment an epiphany, the real root of his behavior.
Unsurprisingly, she doesn’t feel good about this turn. But it’s not making her any more sympathetic to his state of mind.
On the contrary, it's only making her angry.
Angry because she knows what this will lead to. The inevitability of this conversation is so obvious, she should have spotted it miles ahead.
Except she thought she was done with this part of their lives, really.
“Why would that be such a problem exactly?” She’s giving him a challenging look. “If she turned out like you?”

She feels an overbearing desire to displace, overwrite those old intimacies with new ones, ones they could share together.
Because she wants him, this alluring version of him he had become in those weeks when he had imagined himself with her, the hints of which she was already seeing bleed through in his changed behavior and interactions with her, just in a few short days.
And surprisingly she wants her too, the person she had only a short while ago despised and thought bitterly as being the impossible standard she was being compared to. Not the other, but the Olivia Peter had believed was transformed by their relationship. Because the truth is, she realizes, he was bringing out those changes in her.
And beyond anything else, she wants them, these two people they always had the promise of becoming with each other. She wants to be the one doing the crossword in bed with him over a morning cup of coffee, laughing at his jokes, the one who gets to fall asleep in his arms in the blue light of still on late night television, the one who can keep his stuff in her drawer and sleep in his shirt, enveloped in his comforting scent.
And she wants to get there with him, like yesterday.
