    In a forest not too far from a rural town in France, Vanitas dies at the age of 16 by a vampire’s malnomen getting a lucky hit.

    There’s a clopping of hooves on the forest floor, and a voice calling out to him… then darkness.

    There is a mirror in the darkness, a voice saying words that Vanitas can’t understand. It’s muffled, inaudible, incomprehensible. It’s beckoning him, though. Calling.

    In a floating coffin in a magic school, Vanitas wakes up fairly certain that he died. But breathing lungs and beating heart suggest otherwise.
