“Don’t—Alhaitham,” Kaveh hisses, forgetting about his mission to get them out of there as soon as possible. “You killed them!”
“Because they took you.”
Kaveh’s speechless. He hadn’t expected this level of audacity, even from Alhaitham, but he’s entirely too serious to be joking, Kaveh thinks. He really would just kill everyone because they posed a threat to Kaveh, and while it’s not something that he, as a prince, should approve of, because he doesn’t think anyone deserves to die, there’s another part of him that’s a blushing maiden that’s swooning over his knight in shining armor swooping in to save the day.

Instead, to Kaveh’s great surprise, Al-Haitham presses a kiss to his forehead - a breach of propriety, a scandal, really, if word got around to the other nobility - and whispers, “I’ll see you later, Kaveh,” with the same finality as a goodbye. Then he leaves.
Kaveh waits for the door to shut before he mumbles to himself, “What the fuck,” and then he sprints out the door.
Al-Haitham is selected for a covert mission to rescue the Crown Princess. Kaveh waits for his safe return.

Hm?
He knew it was wrong to listen in on a potentially private conversation, but Kaveh’s curiosity took over his decisions. Alhaitham never told him anything anymore, he rationalized. He just wanted to make sure he was forming good relationships with his friends. That was all.
His decision to eavesdrop had nothing to do with this mysterious person who allegedly had Alhaitham of all people wrapped around his finger. Nope. Not one bit.
After saving Sumeru, Alhaitham and Dehya hang out every month to catch up (read: gossip) as friends do. And if that gossip happens to be about Alhaitham’s hopeless crush on his roommate, then so be it.
One day, Kaveh happens to overhear.
