It continues the brief interactions between Rick and Daryl in the first story, Protect and Serve. I recommend reading Protect and Serve first to establish the tentative friendship between Rick and Daryl and to become familiar with Shane and Emily. It can be read as a standalone, but some references will be unfamiliar.
Their relationship here begins as a close acquaintanceship but no established intimacy or romance.
