Summary

Summary
When he drags the pull-bar down or presses his shins into the pads and lifts his legs, the bunching of his muscles takes his focus. He works each group, on rotation to reduce the risk of injury, like his research has advised, and his body changes.
One day, hands slam into his back and he doesn't fall. His hands and knees don't scrape the pavement. He catches himself, and resets, turning to face his attacker. When he takes one steady step in their direction, expression neutral, they spook and run. It happens twice more, and the second time he whirls around and shoves them back, pleased when they land hard on their back, gasping.
He gets in trouble, because of course he does. The teacher calls his parents. He doesn't care.
They leave him alone after that, and Shane feels strong.

There's a phone number under the address. Shane bites his lower lip and wonders if he should call.
A woman with an accented voice picks up after the 5th ring.
“Hello?”
