She wanted to be part of that percentage of people whose love had been requited and they’d lived happily ever after. God how cheesy. Happily Ever After. But, as cheesy and childish as it sounded, Norma wanted that. She wanted that fairytale romance with the man of her dreams. But luck had never been on her side, and the universe was never that kind. So, as much as she hated it, she knew she would be part of the majority. She’d die with those flowers spilling from her lips instead of the words she so desperately wanted to say. It shouldn’t be as hard as it was. It should be easy to speak and tell him how she felt. All she had to do was drive to his house and say Alex Romero, I’m in love with you. But there was something that stopped her. The rational, adult part of her took over. Because there was no way he would ever reciprocate his feelings. All she was, to him, was a pain in the ass, someone he had to clean up after whenever she caused a ruckus. Which seemed like all the time.

It seemed like the hits just kept on coming, he’d argued with Norma, then he’d been too late to save her from carbon monoxide poisoning and he’d lost her, then he’d been arrested for perjury and sentenced to jail. He’d been staring at the only picture he had with Norma and one of the few remaining ones of him and his mother, with no contact with the outside world because who would he call?
