Summary
Buck is silent on the other side of the curtain. Eddie wonders if maybe he’s given up, if there was enough bite in Eddie’s words to send him the other direction. He takes a trembling breath and watches water where it’s beaded on his lips and nose and lashes before it falls breath-stoked towards the shower floor. Eddie thinks, a little wildly, that this would be the view of the god he prayed to that night in the chapel. The thing that watches everything and answers, that sends the rain and the hurt and the death. The thing his abuela so desperately wanted Eddie to find.
He thought he had when he got that text, in that one breath before the knife. He was so sure he’d figured it out, but water droplets can’t look up, and gods weren’t made to be found.

Summary
Buck licks his lips. The towel pools at his feet, and he steps over it, closer. Eddie keeps his tail from wagging in satisfaction at drawing him in.
“Oh, I can stand behind everything I’ve said,” Buck says. His shoulder flexes, and Eddie knows he’s touching himself. Fluffing his cock up, probably squeezing the base, trying to show off his knot. It takes a lot for Eddie not to scoff. “You wanna see?”
Close. The spray of the shower is hitting Buck. They’re chest to chest again. Eddie’s tail thrashes savagely in delight.
Eddie moves fast. One hand on the back of Buck’s neck—wolf weakness, press hard enough and they go limp—and the other on his chest, shoving him up against the wall. A startled growl buzzes against his palm; it’s as intimidating as a kitten’s hiss.
“I told you earlier,” Eddie says, lips brushing Buck’s. “That you’d learn your place.” Buck opens his mouth to speak, and Eddie squeezes the back of his neck until his eyes go hazy. “Thought you’d be smart enough to figure it out on your own. But you're not a very clever puppy, huh? Gotta show you instead.”

Summary
"We're looking to move one of our interns into a junior analyst position," Eddie kept going, watching Buck's reaction very carefully. "It comes with a significant salary increase, benefits, and most notably, a real path upwards within the company."
"That's– that's amazing," Buck breathed. His knee was bouncing faster now, but he seemed to catch himself, forcing himself to appear more measured. "I mean, that's incredible. I've been working really hard, and I know I can–"
It was unheard of for someone Buck's age and lack of tenure to get this position, and Buck knew that. Eddie also knew that, so he chose his next move very carefully.
"Unfortunately, it's a bit of a competition."
