The walk through the hallway behind Alice feels like a walk to the firing squad lineup. God, what are you getting yourself into? Why aren’t you listening to the people who know you so much better than you do? But your feet keep moving and in a minute you are in the lobby, and standing in front of you is the woman who ruined your life.
You ruined each other’s lives, your brain hisses at you. That does not make it any better, you hiss back. You do not speak.
