“Stardust,” Loop says at last, unexpectedly gently. When you glance up, they’re looking away, picking at the—not skin—the gummy celestial membrane that covers the pads of their fingers. They don’t have a mouth, but if they did, it would be frowning. “I think you might need a break.”
“Haha!!!! Ahaha!!!!! Do you think???”
Loop snaps their fingers. “I know what you need. A B plot!”
“…A what?”
“You know. A B plot! Like in plays? It’s what the side characters get up to while more important people are off dying and falling in love and things!”

Grian stepped closer, frowning. The painting showed a man so steeped in some private horror that it billowed off the coarse linen canvas. It showed a figure that’d had a hand completely covering its face, Grian had thought, except now he could see an eye through those opened fingers, bright as an emerald and startled into wonderment, which was strange because verdigris should’ve darkened to brown too –
The eye was staring at him. Two eyes were staring at him, wide and shocked and delighted, and Grian had clearly hit his head on his way out of the vent, because the painting had changed. The figure hadn’t moved, exactly, but its position had shifted like a cel in an animated sequence. The man was standing, smiling, his teeth a white smear against the dark canvas.
“Oh, no, I’m hallucinating,” Grian groaned.

Martyn tried, nerves squirming in him at speaking out of turn, “M’lord, I hope you don’t mind me saying this, but we need to get you out of the open. Do you know if you’re able to walk?”
The proper response– the one he’d come to expect, at the very least– was a snapped correction and then some promised punishment, the Red King’s sour insecurity coming out to bite at his own allies. Just anticipating it made Martyn’s hands itch for his weapon: maybe as soon as the king turned his head he’d chop him apart like a log, like he’d been practicing. Maybe he’d do it before the bastard got a single word out.
“I’m not sure I can walk,” the Red King rasped, putting paid to that notion. “But, um, I— I expect I might be able to stand with some help, if you’d be willing?”

The Red King swayed, lips closing into a dark thin line. He frowned down at Martyn and pulled his hand back like he’d felt an ant bite, tilted his head like he was scenting the air. Stepped away and turned with a practiced swish of his cape, back into the tavern where it was dark and cool.
“I’ll take that as a goodbye, then,” Martyn rasped, levering to his feet. He almost recoiled from brushing away the mark of the Red King’s hand on his shoulder, but he plucked off the bits of flesh in the end.
Decay hadn’t touched the Red King except for his peeling skin, and that was practically a medical condition. Like the discoloration, and the disregard for the integrity of his own muscles, and the tendency to rip at living things with his teeth. Medical conditions. If a zombie breathed oxygen and had blood pumping through him, even if that blood was much more sludgy than it had any right to be, then that zombie– wasn’t a zombie, really.
It was a person, who was alive.

“Poultry Man, I’m gonna have to ask you to step back,” Scar said, and Grian went still. “Or, y’know, I guess I’m telling you? Definitely telling you, this is an order– step away from the Voidsong. Remove your digits from his person now, please, or I am going to have to explode you and explain that to Pearl and she will never give me extra concert tickets ever again.”
Scar had his bow drawn, an arrow pointed in Grian’s direction. He was close enough that it would tear through Grian’s host body like paper, though the explosives in Scar’s quiver would’ve been more effective, and he was tense around the eyes, a wobbling downturn to his mouth. His voice had trembled, emotion leaking through like before he’d gone professional.
Grian knew how those feelings tasted from the inside. He knew those hands, that vascular system, how Scar’s smooth voice felt as it vibrated out of his throat, as his tongue shaped the words– and that was what drew him back from Voidsong, even if it really would’ve been wiser to keep himself intertwined, because he knew that terror, too.
Incredibly well. Way too well, as a matter of fact.
