Summary
In an archipelago inhabited by esoteric, monstrous dragons, the only humans brave enough to live there are the Dragon Cultivator Sects. Disciples of these sects must prove themselves capable dragon tamers and warriors, or die trying. The first step to being initiated as an official Yunmeng Jiang disciple is to catch and train a dragon, thereby proving your bravery, strength, and dominance over the beasts.

El paints her nails, Max's nails, and Steve Harrington's nails. Steve teaches her that maybe people aren't normal or different species or anything at all except human.
Max painted her nails once, a deep burgundy red. That had been nice. El thinks she liked the blue more though, the way it shimmers in the right light. It looks like magic, almost (if magic had a colour that wasn’t abyss black and water for miles). She hopes Max doesn’t mind that she prefers blue, fumbles halfway through the second coat when she realises Max is — She feels bad for preferring things that didn’t happen with Max.
Still, she likes the blue. The way it glitters deep like car paint reminds her of Max anyway. Complex and hidden, like those smiles Max has when she’s trying not to. Blue always reminds her of Max, even though maybe red or orange should. She wonders if it’s that blue room with those blue lights where she took Max’s heart and squeezed —
