Unsurprisingly, the genocidal bugs from another dimension had no idea about human fashion. For all they cared, Newton might as well have walked around naked all the time. That would have drawn too much attention, however, and so they begrudgingly let Newton pick out his clothes.
It was the only freedom Newton had and he sure as shit would not let that opportunity go to waste, so when he sauntered into Shao Industries, Newton was a walking billboard to the people who knew him, screaming ‘alarm, alarm, something is fucking wrong with Newton Geiszler’.

Turns out Hermann was the touchy-feely kind of drunk.
Newton had never seen Hermann so much as tipsy before, impressions and fragments of memories picked up through the drift notwithstanding. That had not prepared him for how clingy Hermann became once his blood alcohol level rose.

Summary
Newton knew most people in the Shatterdome thought he was crazy. He knew he was just a teeny tiny bit unhinged—but he was pretty sure that he hadn’t been the “hallucinations” kind of crazy, at least not until his solo-drift. Since then, he’d been seeing random colours everywhere.
Not everywhere, exactly. Only where there were numbers or letters—which was almost everywhere, but only almost. The colours weren’t exactly random, either. Each letter and every single-digit number corresponded to a specific colour and those didn’t change but were consistent.

Rocky skitters down to my level, right up against the xenonite. “Grace fall! Hurt question? Okay okay okay?”
With all my brainpower, I focus on responding. 'Y-ye-es,' I manage to chirp. I freeze. Process.
That was definitely not English. Or any other human language. I didn’t move any muscles to speak.
'Y-ees,' I say again, and the same chirping note comes out. Inside me, I feel the shifting of five gas-filled… things. That note came from me. But it sounded like Rocky."...
In which Grace wakes up as an Eridian. And then a human. Eridian again.
Figuring out how to walk and sing is the first step. The rest will have to come later.

Summary
Mindy Park is rapidly realising that the first intelligent extraterrestrial to make contact with the human race thinks they’re fucking stupid. She’s pretty sure that Dr Grace isn’t accurately translating half the things Rocky is saying, but most of what he is telling her is that Rocky has a better way of doing what NASA wants them to do, and honestly, it seems like Rocky is mostly right. She probably doesn’t want to know what the other half of what Grace’s new alien friend is saying, if the things that are making it through what she’s calling the “middle school teacher filter” are “why would you do something the dumb way when you could do it the right way”.
or,
Mindy has a headache, Grace has trauma, Mark is confused and Rocky is wondering how humans made it in to space when they're all so, so dumb.

Summary
When Newt next opens his eyes, it’s to the searing heat of a hand against his shoulder.
He flinches away, of course—he doesn’t know what to do with physical touch after so long without it.
And he certainly doesn’t know what the fuck to do with a touch that is gentle.
When was the last time someone touched him tenderly? When was the last time he danced with anyone save his ghosts?
Newt is feverish and aching and filled with so much grief that he doesn’t know if he’ll ever be able to carry his own ghosts any further than this fucking toilet seat, with the orange acid and the gleaming porcelain and the cheap tiles beneath his knees.
And when Newt looks up, he thinks that it’s one of the dreams that the precursors once infected his brain with. The dreams of Hermann Gottlieb showing up by his side, stepping foot inside of that penthouse apartment in Shanghai, and sweeping him off of his feet and taking him away from that wretched fucking place.
(After being released from prison, Newt finds himself under probation as Hermann's lab assistant. When he gets sick, he thinks no one will care- but he will find himself sorely mistaken.)
