You can see the effects of it, measure the wear of water against rock from one point to another, but it takes time. So much time that the rock barely changes one day to the next, and then one day you see it with new eyes. It has changed. When did it change? Did I watch it change? Why didn’t I realise?
Even for an immortal, it is difficult to remove yourself from the present to such a degree that you can map every single one of these infinitesimal changes with complete objectivity. Whether that’s wearing down rock, or her resolve.
Bella is sure it began long before that night in her room. Long before Greece, or Paris. Perhaps it began in Italy, standing on that stone parapet, staring into Caius's room, his occupied bed. Perhaps before, in the pits, pledging herself to a king. Perhaps even before that, in the throne room, barely one year into her change and trying so hard to be brave for a family who had only ever tried to protect her from this very possibility.
