Summary
Hiccup has dealt with a lot of pain in his life. The loss of a limb, the near constant phantom pain of the aftermath, being burned more times than he can count, struck by lightning, held in chains and beaten by Outcasts and Hunters. It only makes sense that he's... adept at handling it. Along with that, he forgives almost everyone that comes across him and shows that they deserve it. Alvin, Dagur, Mala, Atali, Viggo, all of them had in some way crossed, threatened, or attacked Hiccup or his people, yet he forgives them, and seeks out peace and even friendship with them. The thing is, sometimes he gives his forgiveness to those that don't believe they deserve it.
OR
The gang are all ambushed and captured by Viggo and Krogan, leaving Dagur as the only one able to save them. The two Hunter Leaders are prepared to punish them should they not meet their demands. Hiccup takes the hits for them, just like he has before, so many times in the past, and does so without expecting thanks, or forgiveness, just like he has before. However, Viggo has more of a plan than just senselessly beating the boy. No, he wants to break his friends as well, without even touching them. And all he'll need to do so is the past.

Summary
Shunned and abused by his own family, Hiccup runs away with Toothless. He knows he can't return, but that doesn't stop him from holding on to his past. When Astrid and his other old teammates arrive at his island, they ask him something he would never have expected.
OR
The raids on Berk have become increasingly common- they can barely go a week without being attacked. When Traders come in with the last of their food, Astrid hears something about the boy who can control dragons. As a last resort, Astrid and her team are sent away to request the Dragon Master's help.

“For what purpose are you here?” Astrid called, stepping to stand at the chief's side. She was Heir, this was her conversation as much as it was Stoicks.
The dragon master soothed a hand over the creature's snout. “You are under-attack by a mutual enemy. I come to offer the aid of myself and mine.” He said calmly.
Stoick breathed in sharply. Astrid looked at him in worry.
“Berk has not requested any aid, let alone aid from a devil escaped from Hel and his brother.” Stoick responded, the leather handle on his axe creaking as he flexed his grip. “This war is no concern to you.”
“Oh but it is.” the man chuckled, voice turning dangerous. Anger colored his tone as his hand stilled over the dragon and curled into a fist. “Drago Bludvist has been my enemy for a decade. He attacks mine and torments them under his command. He is a godless cunt and a coward. The only way he will meet his end is at my hand, or paw.”

Berk being haunted by the disappearance of the chiefs wimpy son, while said wimpy boy is desperately trying to help Berk out and while also not revealing his identity. Toothless is doing his best to offer moral support and not take a chunk out of Stoick
