Summary
Affection rushes up his throat in a choking torrent. It feels like being pinned against the console of the Hail Mary all over again, disoriented and unable to breathe. It feels like digging his fingers into the blistered, weeping wound on his forearm the best friend he’s ever had left behind. It’s the leaden weight in his chest because for once he’s more scared for someone else than he is for himself. With the swell of emotion, comes clarity.

The terms Barish-Estranza gives the lost colony are simple. Unconditional surrender, sign indenture paperwork for every adult and child, or they will eliminate all dissidents on record using a Combat SecUnit, and the killing will continue until they get their way.
The people of Esperia have no idea what that is. Barish-Estranza has technology that they have never seen. But they know they have to save the children. They pack the colony's children onto their one functioning ship, the Horizon, along with teachers and a barely adequate crew, and send them toward the wormhole that may lead back to the world that the Esperian colonists originally came from.
