‘You could come out,’ Shane said eagerly.
‘What?’
‘Come out, you know, tell everyone that you’re in a relationship with a man. Then you wouldn’t be able to go back to Russia, and your family would leave you alone.’ It was perfect.
But Rozanov was shaking his head. ‘Risk is too big,’ he said. ‘Without Raiders contract, my visa will change, maybe I do not even get to stay in America. If I burn bridges with Russia, could be very bad.’
‘Oh.’ Shane thought for a minute. ‘What about Canadian residency? Then you’d get healthcare and be able to play for any of the leagues, or do something else entirely if you need to.’
Rozanov looked confused. ‘I would have to play for Canadian team, maybe, to get Canadian citizenship, live in Canada, I don’t know how many years would take. Would be dream only.’
Shane was terrified and excited at the same time as the rest of the idea fell into place in his mind. ‘What if we got married?’ he asked, stomach fluttering. ‘You’d get a Canadian passport, you’d be safe, no matter what happens.’

Yuna stars volunteering for a charity program run by the Ottawa Centaurs. There, she meets Ilya Rozanov and they become friends. Then she finds out that Ilya is bisexual and single. Coincidentally, she has a gay son who is also single.

Finally, something dawns on him, a way to handle two goals simultaneously. He’d seen Hollander’s mother flipping through papers rapidly when they first got here, seeming calm and in control and more than a little frightening in a way that made Ilya mildly glad he wasn’t one of the people responsible for a clipboard. If anyone can tell him if the long list of “Prohibited Items” he’d been sent in his email a few days ago is just standard practice for big shoots, it would be Yuna Hollander.
Or, hopefully, her son.
“Crazy we cannot even have peanut butter, eh?” He asks. “You also got giant list?”
Hollander stiffens, almost imperceptibly, and Ilya tilts his head, just slightly, confused, wondering if he’s stumbled somewhere unexpected.
(how ilya learns about shane's allergies) (and shane's sexual awakening tragically hits a speedbump in the process 😔)

Based on a Reddit prompt by u/backtothefuture2028.
Ilya, emotionally drained from being away from Shane for weeks and tired after a fight on ice with Dallas Kent and a tough away game loss, accidentally reveals a boyfriend at the ensuing press conference. Unable at first, then unwilling to take it back to avoid speculation, Ilya finally learns just how much support he actually has once his heart is splayed open for the world to see.
Updated with a second chapter at Bood’s barbecue! Definitely a sillier palate cleanse after the first chapter.
