“It is routine,” Leon cut in sharply.
The silence that followed was immediate. Chris stared at him like he didn’t recognize him. Leon felt it, like something cracking open in his chest.
So he doubled down.“That’s the job,” he added, colder now. “You don’t get to pick when it’s convenient.”
Chris flinched. It was small and barely noticeable, but Leon still saw it. And it made something inside him twist so violently he almost lost his footing.
*Good. Keep going. Make it worse. He’ll let go if you make it worse.*

“He’s what?” Through the glass of the observation deck Chris could see him. Leon was in a quarantine cell with padded walls and floor. There was a bed on a metal frame laid in the corner, on top of it sat Leon. Paler than the last time he’d seen him but at the very least sober unlike Colorado. That was about the only upside Chris could think of. He was infected with something. Not the T-virus, or A-virus or Los Plagas. Something that Rebecca hadn’t seen yet, though she was actively working to fix it, if anyone could find a cure it would be her.
It wasn’t any kind of bioweapon either had seen before. He wasn’t aggressive, at least at this moment. No bite marks or any visible injury that Rebecca could find. Just one minute talking with Chris and next convulsing on the ground. Leon was rushed into the medical ward of the BSAA and the next he knew he was told Leon was infected with something that no one knew with. Just perfect.

Benn had huffed around his cigarette and waved off his captain's worry, but Shanks knew better; he knew that Buggy The Clown never missed a chance to be seen in public with powerful company... or a chance to crawl into Shanks’ embrace (and silken sheets).
In hindsight, Benn really should have trusted his captain’s instincts on this one.
