One can only play it cool for so long when one, then two, then three, then four actual villains turn out to be one's soulmates. Maybe Rook can stave off the inevitable by never speaking HIS first words back to them, because leaving the Seeds tormented with a half-formed soul-bond each couldn't possibly drive them to do anything extreme... right?
OR:
The Seeds don't really know how to take "no" for an answer.
