“What the hell is this?” he demanded, his voice sharp and brimming with anger as he hurled the crumpled parchment onto the small table between them.
Penelope’s heart stilled as she recognized the letter, her own handwriting glaring up at her. She gasped, the weight of the situation crashing down around her. It was the first draft she had written to Lady Bridgerton—the one she had discarded, choosing instead to send a more neutral version. But this letter was the one where she had dared to mention the unthinkable: her willingness to accept an annulment if Colin wished it.
Colin’s eyes bore into hers, the anger simmering beneath his calm façade barely contained. Before she could utter a word, he spoke again, his voice laced with disbelief. “Annulment? Are you being serious?”

Penelope held out the pamphlet, her hands trembling slightly as she stretched her arms toward him. “Read this,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I wrote it last night. It’s the latest Whistledown issue, set to be published tomorrow.”
She turned her back on him, unable to watch his reaction. Crossing the room, she leaned against the desk, trying to keep her voice steady as she explained. “I’m letting you read it first to ensure that everything written is agreeable to you. It won’t tarnish your reputation. It also won’t ruin mine. It will simply free us from this…” She gestured vaguely between them, the weight of the unspoken words hanging in the air. “This arrangement.”
For a moment, there was silence. She could hear the rustle of paper as Colin unrolled the pamphlet and began to read.
The silence stretched on, too long, too thick. And then, Colin’s voice cut through it, low and trembling with barely suppressed anger.
“What the fuck is this?”
