Vi comes to a stop in front of a portrait of a woman standing with her back to the viewer, only half of her face visible over her shoulder. There is a hunting rifle in her hand, and a proud arch in her spine. There’s something about the woman’s expression that Vi can’t look away from–it’s soft, almost curious, but there’s an undeniable sharpness in her eye, like she’s staring right into Vi’s soul.
She’s also, at least from what Vi can tell by the angle of the portrait, exactly Vi’s type.
“Well, hey there, handsome,” Vi says under her breath.
“Good afternoon.”

Summary
A faint rustling came from behind the ajar door.
A heartbeat later, it creaked open, and one of her job's many responsibilities quietly stepped inside.
Wednesday didn't react, waiting for the inevitable.
She heard tiny feet shuffling across the floor and felt a pair of sleepy— yet most likely excited —brown eyes fixed on her. Listening to the congested little sniffles, she counted down the seconds.
It didn't take long.
“Mamá?”
At last, a hoarse, slightly squeaky voice called out, carefully forced into a whisper, in a determined effort not to scare anyone.
With a slow inhale, blinking away the last traces of sleep, Wednesday finally turned her full attention to the small visitor standing obediently just beside the bed.
“Have you been awake long?”
