He would be on a team with Ino and Chōji, he would get Asuma as a sensei, they’d be given a “genin test” to make sure they were a “real team,” and the Ino-Shika-Cho would pass down another generation. Getting assigned Kakashi shouldn’t have been too much of a change—sure, he was probably ANBU, but it was a politics thing. A high-ranking jonin for the clan heirs; it didn’t make any difference whether it was the current Hokage’s son or the former Hokage’s student who got them.
This year…
Chōji did get assigned to Asuma, but not with, you know, their team. Ino had gotten some new jonin called Kurenai, and the list had kept going without assigning Shikamaru.
