Undyne was practicing with her Dummy.
And by practicing I mean beating the absolute crap out of it, until finally, it broke.
Sans was on the sidelines, rooting for the Dummy.
"shoot. i bet 20 bucks on that dummy."
Undyne turned to him, raising an eyebrow. "Who the heck did you make a bet with?"
"this rock." He replied with a wink, gesturing to the stone on the floor beside him.
Undyne rolled her eyes, and turned her gaze back to the broken Dummy, before groaning. "Great, NOW what do I train with???"
Sans stepped up to her. "well, i have been told that i have a thick skull."

Life on the surface is going well for monsterkind. Sans in particular is surprised to find how much he's enjoying actually having a life again. So it surprises him when, one day, Frisk is the one expressing doubts about how things are going. All he can do is try to put their mind at ease, the way they have for him.

They hadn’t even been on the surface two weeks when Frisk declared they wanted to take a road trip. They wouldn’t say why. They wouldn’t say where to exactly, either. Just that it was apparently quite far away from Mt. Ebott, and that there would be plenty of interesting sights along the way.
“I know the way,” they said, and they sounded confident enough that their friends couldn’t help but believe them."

Written for doodleimprovement on tumblr as part of the 2016 Undertale Secret Santa. The prompt was: "family feels and Dunkle Sans." When Frisk proposes a road trip to show their new friends the sights on the surface, there's almost not enough room in Papyrus' new car to fit them all. Still, the surface proves to be a very interesting place. especially when you tour it with good friends by your side. And if Frisk has an ulterior motive for this roadtrip, well, it's not like the monsters don't owe the kid a few favors.When that ulterior motive involves a confrontation with the parents Frisk left behind to fall, Sans in particular is surprised to realize just how important this kid has come to be to them all.

Summary
It's been a little over two months since the Barrier was destroyed, monsterkind was freed from the underground, and able to begin pursuing better lives on the surface.
Papyrus is doing great, of course. He's busting tables at a diner to keep the roof over his and Sans' heads, thoroughly enjoying the freedoms and experiences of the surface world whenever he has the time. Life feels so much richer and there are so many more opportunities up here in the sunlight than there ever could've been in the dreary darkness of the underground. Everyone he knows seems to be thriving and happy.
Everyone, except for Sans.

They say, when you're starting to Fall Down, you should start carrying around something you love. Not so that whoever has the misfortune of needing to scatter your dust has something you love on hand, but so that you have something close-by to stave off the inevitable while you get your affairs in order.
Sans doesn't really have anything he loves that's small enough to just carry around. He doesn't love things.

Sans doesn't like talking about complicated things. He categorizes his nightmares as "complicated", given the fact that the majority are about things that have never technically happened. How does one talk about the fact that they're flinching away from a kid because in another timeline, they kill everyone you love?
Worse, how do you console said kid when they have nightmares about you?

Summary
The first day of the week Papyrus texted Sans informing him he was working late tonight and wouldn't be home at his usual time, Sans didn't think anything of it.
The second day that week that Papyrus informed him he would be home late was a little more odd, but still nothing outright worrying.
The third day was far more strange, but far from being a nag, Sans left his brother to his own devices.
The fourth day he questioned if that was a wise decision.
And by the fifth day, Sans has had about enough.

Summary
The Great Papyrus considered himself an extremely detailed individual. Indeed, he puts every bit of detail into all that he does with vigor, and notices far more details about those around him than he is frankly given credit for!
If he's hanging out with Undyne and she is having a more difficult time than strictly warranted calling Alphys to talk about the weather, Papyrus notices.
If he happens to cross paths with the dogi for a minute on patrol, and they are having a more stressful work day than normal but grin and bare it anyway, Papyrus notices.
And if something was off about Sans recently, not quite 'off' in the sense that there's something specific Papyrus could call him out on, but 'off' in the weird, vague sense that simply gives his keen intuition the impression something is amiss...
