Despite all of her efforts, Hilda had failed to convince Erik to stand down in the face of what seemed like an all-out troll invasion. Ahlberg, shaken but undeterred by the visions brought on by the mountain king’s eye, proceeded to command his men to fire their weapons at will. ‘No mercy!’, he yelled—and there was indeed no mercy shown thereafter.
It was not an entirely unexpected outcome. This had the potential to be Erik’s big break—his one way ticket to stardom—and he was not about to waste it. Oh, he could see it then. Just like his ancestor, Edmund Alhberg, it was in his mind no question that he would go down in Trolberg’s history as a great trollslayer for stopping the ‘horde’ at the walls. Not only would he be a hero and celebrity in life, but he would also be remembered fondly by all long after he was gone. Erik had the key to immortality on his hands, and all for the price of a few troll lives.
