    I’m a spy," Moze says.

"A spy who lost a bet," Feixiao grins, holding out a pair of shoes, "and now has to suffer the consequences."

Moze stares at the pair of pink tuskpir-shaped shoes in her hand.

And quietly, the next thought falls into his mind, sifting through layers to arrive gently at his feet.

If he was given the choice to rewind time, to go back and switch places with Jiaoqiu, he would refuse.

The admission of the truth, even just to himself, is a heavy blow. The slow fall of an executioner's axe. His ribs collapse, guts strangling and strangling, and he wouldn't. He wouldn't. If he were in Jiaoqiu's position he would have died or been blinded and then he'd be useless and he can't be useless he can't he needs them to need him they have to.

His sides squeeze in sharp short bursts.

Jerkily, he turns a corner and steps behind a wall, covered from prying eyes.

Something rough grazes his hands, and he realises that he's slid to the ground, hands braced. He can't hear his heartbeat, he thinks. There's nothing, only an empty sonorous cavern full of silence that's waiting for the drum. He waits and waits but nothing happens. No sound, no beat, no pulse. For all intents and purposes he could be functionally dead. The thought of that turns his head in further; makes his thoughts swirling like blood down a drain. There's nothing but the slight ringing in his ears, and all he can see are the shadows flickering. The grit sticking to his hands presses him further into his mind

Muscles give way, and in the next moment he's looking upwards, shock resounding in the back of his skull, and he lies, legs twisted on the ground. He should probably get up before the other two find him like this.

For a while he loses track of time, everything blurring around him. With slight interest, he notes that his chest isn't moving.

    "Moze you need to breathe—"

The sun is bright, too bright and he squeezes his eyes shut. Blue light dances behind his lids.

Opening the door, there are mostly spices and herbs, but on a different shelf, a bit higher, he can distinguish some bottles.

Without much difficulty, he reaches up and swiftly grabs a few, staring at them.

    What is he doing?

It’s three in the morning, and here he is, raiding Jiaoqiu’s medicine cabinet like a child and a cookie jar.

Moze opens his own bottle, picking out the circular tablets and swallowing them whole.

There’s another one that says “pain relief”, and Moze decides that he can do something spontaneous for once and regret his decisions in the morning.

Something about these makes him feel like he’s good, worthy. Like he’s not worthless.

About ten minutes later, he’s downed half the pills in the pantry stock, and he’s coming to the realisation he’s just done something very, very wrong.

Instantly, there are figures towering over him, and he lowers to the ground, the bottles quietly watching from their temporary place on the kitchen table.

They are telling him he’s trying to kill himself.

Telling him he’s trying to go against the Sanctus Medicus, the holy saint that was supposed to save him and now he will instead rot in hell.

    No, he tries to scream.

No, he thinks to himself. No, I just wanted to be good.

Jiaoqiu will be furious at him in the morning.

    Summary

Peering into the mirror, Alhaitham found a pair of wide tourmaline eyes staring back at him - pools of aquamarine dotted red and gold at the slits, just like his original human pupils. And his body, a gradient of soft greys and whites, had been decorated with intricate black spots all throughout. Reminiscent of a snow leopard or a silver rishboland tiger, the speckles ran all the way down his sides to his hind legs, and inky, elegant lines curled around his face as if kohl had been painted into his very fur.

Alhaitham, by some curse or some miracle, had been turned into a cat.

    Summary

He’s a Haravatat, Kaveh thinks with no small amount of disdain. And…a grandmother’s boy, two years his junior, with a green thumb; a master of his craft, who’s never walked anyone else through his tiny, enchanting gardens. Maybe, just maybe, it balances out.

Kaveh isn't going into battle or anything, so it's not like he needs the absolute strongest potions he can get his hands on. It's just, like, you know, the shopkeeper is kinda hot and funny, when he's not busy running the most pretentiously named alchemical brewery in existence. Kaveh has room in his budget for a visit every now and again. With coffee.
