Summary
The seed is planted when he sees Damen standing with an official from Patras.
Damen’s in his usual white attire. This one is trimmed in Akielon red with a gold cord around his waist, making him seem broader, if that’s even possible. His lion pin glinting in the sunlight coming in through the open arches.
He has the thought that the other man looks similar to Nikandros. Nothing drastic – he’ll always look more like Damen than anyone else – but the shape of the stranger's face, the nose, the dark brows, the clean cut beard that’s just beginning to grow back.
Then he wonders what Damen and Nikandros would look like kissing.

“If you like,” Laurent added, “I can send a notice. 'Your TA regrets to inform you that he has chosen peace this morning.' I’m sure it will be received with maturity.”
Damen looked up, then, and directed the full weight of his smile at Laurent, his eyes crinkling with warmth, the way they always did whenever Laurent made time for him.
He was fucking ridiculous. Laurent felt himself flush, and did his best to think of cold things.
“You’re impossible,” Damen said. He sounded so happy.
Laurent turned to his coffee machine. He didn’t know why Damen bothered with it. “And yet,” Laurent said, “remarkably consistent.”

Summary
“There’s a lot of blood,” said Laurent, because this amount of red was more than he had ever seen anyone survive. He tried to remind himself that he was dealing with a man who was both gigantic and seemingly invincible. Surely for Damen this was just a scrape and he would laugh at Laurent for worrying.
“There is,” Damen agreed, his voice uncharacteristically somber.
Laurent's head snapped up. Their eyes met; understanding passed between them. Damen knew his own body. Damen had always downplayed his injuries before.
(Or: Damen's stab wound at the end of Kings Rising turns out to be fatal after all.)
