She stands at the counter, focusing intently on the bouquet she’s putting together -- her brow is furrowed and her glasses are pushed up uncomfortably close to her eyes. That didn’t excuse the way she snapped at Jess when she suggested that Lena take some time off for the holidays.
“What for, Jess, to spend some time with my family?” she’d hissed, an apology already on her tongue the second she realizes what she’d said. Jess however stood her ground, unperturbed.“Yes, that actually was what I was thinking of.”
For a second, Lena was too stunned even to answer, before she managed to gather herself. “Miss Huang, you surely must be joking.” Her voice was low, carefully controlled.
Jess didn’t even flinch.
“I’m not talking about your blood relatives, Miss Luthor. Everyone can see that you’re basically a part of the Danvers clan already.”

It's a slow process, but Lena learns that she does in fact have a family that cares about her.

Summary
Kara stops outside to take the shelter in. It’s got huge glass panes, letting lots of light in. From the sidewalk, all that’s visible is the receptionist, some posters about adoption, and a brightly lit waiting room. She assumes the dogs and cats are somewhere in the back, so not to overwhelm them. The scrawling neon sign above the door that reads “Happy Heart” completes the look, giving it an air of elegance and friendliness.
She walks in, bell chiming on the door. The receptionist greets her cheerily, and after she quickly explains that she’s the newest volunteer, she’s ushered to the back. Since it’s her first shift, she’s stuck cleaning cages. The good news is that another volunteer will work with her to show her the ropes.

Kara studies Lena’s skirt and the open zipper which was now at her eye level, instinctively reaching out to touch before hesitating.
Instead, her fingers nervously rub against each other as she pauses, her cheeks a light pink as she takes in the soft curves of Lena's waist and stomach, trying to focus on the task at hand. This is about Lena and making sure she was okay. Nothing else. Friends make sure their friends are alright.OR, after the events of 4x02 Kara tends to an exhausted and lightly injured Lena.

So when her brain sorta just… stops, she really can’t be blamed, because the woman sitting at the table is gorgeous.
Long, inky-black hair flows from under a big hat, red-stained lips curve up in an accommodating smile. Her eyes are shielded behind those big, ridiculous sunglasses celebrities wear at the airport- big enough, in fact, that Kara can see her own gaping reflection in them.
“It’s no problem, Miss. Really,” the man says, and his voice, thankfully, snaps Kara out of her daze.
Kara blinks, slapping a big smile on her face and pulling her eyes away from the woman. “Right! Sorry, I just, uh, tripped."or
Kara’s a waitress.
Lena is her customer.
