Summary
Belle Époque Paris, 1913. Verso Dessendre is very good at being wanted. It is, in fact, the only thing the world has ever been willing to pay a ruined aristocrat for, and he has made his peace with that.
Then Gustave Virlogeux — celebrated conductor of the Opéra, one hand of flesh and one of steel, immovable as a closed door — catches him breaking into the rehearsal hall to play a piano in the dark. Instead of calling the gendarmes, he offers Verso a real chance and an honest wage, and commits the truly unforgivable sin of refusing to be charmed.
This is a story about a maestro who won't play along, a brat who won't behave, and a grand piano that did not consent to any of this. It is also, underneath all that, a story about being wanted for the whole of yourself — scars, ruin, and all — by someone who refuses to let you sell the one true thing you've got.
Or: a maestro who conducts in bed exactly as he does on the podium, a pianist whose every seduction technique fails spectacularly and repeatedly (until it doesn't), and one grand piano that did not survive the experience.

Long ago, the city now known as Old Lumière prospered, watched over by a benevolent sorceress known as The Paintress. Then came the drought. And the famine. Unable to heal him, the sorceress did the only thing she could to save him - she cast a curse. From that moment on, he became a terrible creature, the outward manifestation of the worst parts of himself. The city fell, overrun with cursed monsters. And a clock began ticking down. If, within a century, the creature that had once been Verso could find his soulmate, he would be returned to life. But if a hundred years pass without a soulmate being found the curse would take every last descendent of Old Lumière.

And Gustave does know about soulmates. The thing about soulmates is that they are incredibly rare. Because not only did both souls have to be compatible, both had to be willing, too. He wants, and yet he doesn't know quite what he wants, not anymore. Only that whatever it is, he can never have it.
He closes his eyes briefly, letting out a soft, exhausted breath. Then, knowing he isn't needed anymore, and keenly aware that he was never wanted in the first place, he turns on his heel and leaves, heading for the Harbor.
Or: Post-game, Maelle restores Lumière and her inhabitants before her departure from the Canvas — Sophie among them. Verso takes it as well as can be expected (that is to say, not well at all).

Summary
Gustave bought the painting on a rainy Thursday because it was easier to stand among abandoned things than return to an apartment that never felt like his own. He didn't expect the grand piano on the canvas to play itself at midnight. He didn't expect the white roses to multiply.
And he certainly didn't expect Verso—the man trapped inside the ballroom, preserved in oil and grief by a mother who couldn't let go.
In a world that feels half-erased by the rain, two lonely souls find each other across the edge of a gilded frame. But to truly be together, Verso must confront the memory that painted him into a masterpiece and learn what it means to be a person again, rather than just a portrait.
