Bucky doesn’t understand pain. It seems like a weird thing to say, a weird thing to admit considering that he is— he was—, is he still the Winter soldier? Is he Bucky? Is he James? —The Winter soldier.
Decades of torture and hurt would make it seem like a joke if Bucky said anything about it, would make someone laugh and pass it off as dark humor while Bucky sat there, lifeless and wondering if there was yet another thing wired incorrectly inside him.
Or Bucky tries to navigate his life after being free, fighting and making up with Sam, trying not to murder someone and learning how to hurt.

Bucky stared at the words on his screen as he felt his heart shatter. Things had been going well with him and Sam so the message came as a surprise. He wasn’t shocked per say. Ever since they got together, he had been waiting for Sam to realize that he is too broken to spend forever with. As he thought about the past couple weeks, he could see signs he had neglected before. Sam kept on talking about a new apartment. He’d also seemed more withdrawn and a little secretive, leaving the room to take certain calls or hiding things in his night stand.
