Summary
Originally it was the offer of a job at the local university that brought Jayce Talis to Mainspring--even if that ended up not working out for the recently divorced man looking to get back on his feet. What ended up working out was a small coffee shop in Historic Downtown Mainspring, where he gets to know the citizens of the city.
Then a new face appeared just days before Christmas, and Jayce found himself remembering what falling in love felt like. The only problem is that the man he's falling in love with might not love him back.

“I am guessing you have another invitation,” Viktor says softly. Jayce’s non-answer of shrugging his shoulders is enough of a confirmation for Viktor to continue. “The flowers did not work? Or the strongly worded letters?”
“Not even Mel is working with me on this. She says I have to go,” Jayce spits, “like I — like I’m expected to recite all our research on a coin flip. As if anyone there besides her will even understand it.”
He hides his eyes behind the cup of his hands, though Viktor knows he’s still staring down at their scattered notes for a distraction. Between vellum and coffee-stained sheafs of schematics is a familiar, albeit more elaborately decorated, square of near-black cardstock. Its gold filigree glitters in the frosted light coming in from the windows, yet it brings no warmth. No glee. No self-satisfaction at having caught it too late.
Viktor slides it out from between their notes with two fingers, leaving it on the tabletop for the both of them to read. Jayce’s name is prominent in thin, blocky text — another invitation, another offer for his time in exchange for a few hours of pretend in front of a flock that’s already made up its mind.

“Do you want to?”Jayce Talis sold his medical supply company and took on a position as an adjunct professor at the University of California. He needed a change. A distraction. He didn't know that he'd ever found himself to have lost himself.
He didn't think he'd find himself in the bottom of a Manhattan at a bar in the Mission district, and he thought he'd find himself even less in the smoke exhaled his direction from a man in a thrifted black button up top and a half-pony. But he certainly found a change and a distraction.

Summary
All things considered; the pitfall had technically served its intended purpose. That came as no surprise to Viktor. Rarely did he ever construct a trap that didn’t do exactly what he’d built it to do.
It was what he found at the bottom of it that left him rattled.
