This is all too much. The snow, the lost luggage, the jetlag, the entire last year with Ben. I want to sit here, flat on my ass in the middle of the concrete, and cry. But the big mitten is already in front of my face.
“Up you go.” The hand inside the mitten is strong and I’m back on my feet easily.
I try to steady myself. Physically and mentally.
“Take this,” I hear, and the next moment, his coat clamps around me, the hood spilling over my forehead. I’m immediately enveloped in blissful warmth.

Most people knew this about him, most of his coworkers respected his nods or otherwise silent greetings and didn’t bother to try and converse with him.
All except one Nicholas Nelson, of course.
Nick was a morning, afternoon, mid-afternoon, and night person. Much to Charlie’s chagrin, Nick was a never-off-even-for-a-single-second-of-the-day type person.
And, boy, that irritated Charlie to no end because no person should always be that cheerful and happy and full of conversation.
