When Merlin opened his eyes to see Uther Pendragon in all his menacing glory standing in the middle of his hospital room, he was almost certain that he must be high on painkillers, because there was no way, there was absolutely no way, that Uther Pendragon was standing in the middle of his hospital room.
“You’re awake,” Uther said, his voice almost pleasant. Merlin was immediately suspicious but the feeling was more muted than he usually felt when Uther showed up unannounced in his life – or rather Arthur’s life that Merlin was intrinsically a part of. Actually, everything was rather muted and hazy, which might be because Merlin was high on painkillers.

It took less time to process than Ronan expected. Or more. Seconds were blurring and signals crossing; once he'd hit the second bottle of cheap, convenience store vodka, things began to blend. Meld. All shit, jet-fuel alcohol sugars. Adam's face stilled, like the halting of facial procedures helped him compute information faster.
“And that…” Adam swallowed. “That was… inspiring for you?”
“Listen to the song and tell me how inspiring it is.” Ronan wiggled the device, again. “Come on. Most guys are flattered by this shit.”
“You wrote a song about me?”
“I write a lot of songs about you.” Ronan blinked, twice.

The singing had stopped, which meant that Ronan actually might come up to see him, and Adam refused to be caught off guard. It was absurd, honestly, that Adam’s reality now included things like waiting in bed for Ronan Lynch, even though it wasn’t that kind of waiting or that kind of bed. The way his eyelids doubled as leaves some nights would be less surprising to the Adam of one year ago than this inexplicable urge to run his hand through his hair again, just one more time, before Ronan knocked on the door. Or, well, maybe not.
