"As an engineer, I was taught to examine a possible problem from every angle. Overlooking anything, no matter how small, how seemingly unimportant, could lead to problems. If something were to go wrong because I missed a critical flaw in Grace’s air recycling system or the medical robot’s drug distribution doses or the fucking Taumoeba breeder tanks again, that would be its blood on my already stained hands. I can’t allow it to die on my watch like I did so many others."
Or: As the Hail Mary gets closer to Erid and Grace's condition begins to worsen, Rocky tries his best to suppress more than 46 years of trauma in order to focus on keeping Grace alive. This doesn't go well.

She barks out her boisterous laugh. “I am absolutely the wrong person to ask,” she says.

“They kept asking questions that had nothing to do with Quinn’s performance.” I roll my eyes and notice that I’m getting worked up again. Trying to get the midnight blue Eridian back on track had been a nightmare and I’d almost lost my composure a couple of times. “Just what I like to do and what I’ve seen of Erid so far and if they can give me a tour once my suit is finished. And they insisted I tell them what my favorite type of mineral is. I mean, why would they want to know that? What does that have to do with how their kid is doing in class?”
Midway through my rant Rocky has stopped carding his claw through my hair. He is silent for a few seconds and I’m just about to ask him if he’s alright when his whole body starts to tremble. It alarms me enough that I wiggle my arms underneath me and lift my upper body off the couch.
“Rock?”
But then the trembling morphs into full on shaking and then laughter so loud and shrill that I have to cover my ears.

The elevator's receiver array picks up a garbage signal beamed in from deep space. No matter their attempts, Eridian scientists cannot make top or bottom of it. A misfire, or an echo of that long lost crew's final transmission, most likely. It is recorded, but never publicized.

Summary
So I can't die.
I was in undergrad when I finally couldn't deny it any more. I'd been hit by a car and walked it off with barely a scratch. Though, really, "can't die" was a wild oversimplification of something I still didn't fully understand.
Aka Grace remembers that he's literally indestructible at the worst possible moment. This complicates things.
