He'd never imagined this is what untethered existence could look like, because when he had time, a couple of years or decades ago, it was hard to imagine the depth of the wounds. Later it was hard to imagine recovery, as one faltering look towards the gashes opened them up deeper, and there was pain, so much of it. Now, somehow, he's getting better.
