Billy hums from behind him. Steve doesn’t have to turn around to know how he looks; lounged in his bed, suntanned, and with the sheets pooling artfully around him even if it’s too fucking hot to even be partly under the covers.
“Can’t even get you to shut up when you’re asleep.”
He should tell him, he thinks. Feels like a hypocrite, feels like bullshit, because that’s what Nancy had wanted to do, had wanted to tell Barb’s parents there was no reason to hope when they should be grieving.
He should tell him, he thinks again. What if it’ll end up being what saves his life?

With the rise and fall of the water, he felt just as much thrown back onto his ship as he’d been tossed off of it. He was glad for having turned on so many lights. As he heaved himself back onto the diving platform and landed on his side to catch his breath, he didn’t want to imagine having to navigate this situation in the pitch dark…
Because a face was watching him from the water.
Steve might’ve contemplated what it meant for his soul to leave his body, but now it felt like it truly flew the coop.

Summary
Billy has his first Change when he’s nine years old.
He hadn’t really been normal before that, though. His mom would take them swimming and she’d Change, and even though he didn’t have a fin or gills, he’d be able to keep up with her in the water. Would hold his breath for far longer than the typical two to three minutes; he could pop up to the surface a half an hour later without his lungs aching at all. He knew that it wasn’t considered normal, but it was his normal. Both him and his mom. And sharing something like that with her was worth the lifetime of secrets he knew came with it.
