It’s the way he reaches for an apple to peel for me after a morning run, the way his hand finds a stool for me without being asked when I’ve been drilling soldiers on my feet all day. The little gestures are the hooks that dig under my skin, even as my anger lives in the marrow.
And the anger does live there. It haunts every step I take. It is a twisted thing, my wish to haunt him as he has haunted me. I want the love he thinks he feel for me to never be undone. I want to be the one truth he cannot shake, the weight that ruins him should he ever outlive me.
So, I smile at him now, a smile that doesn’t reach my eyes. “You know I’m yours, don’t you?” I say, as if I’m not already planning how to be the ghost he cannot escape.
