“What happened to them?” she asks one evening, into the starlight. It’s always easier to talk at night, like they’re whispering secrets into the dark. He knows that’s why she waits to ask her questions until it gets dark. He can’t blame her for thinking that way. The Catholic Church used to think the same thing, that it was easier to confess if you couldn’t see the person you were confessing to.But he can see pretty well in the dark now. And he can still see her. He’s watching her watch him.
”Who?”
--It would be easier to lie. But now he finds he doesn’t want to lie about it. Lying about it means treating it like the pain of your favorite serial stopping before the end, the author not finishing that series you like, the studio cancelling your favorite soap. And it’s kinda like that, the pain.
It is kinda like that only it’s also your entire life. Your life and all of the people in it.

He crept toward the bedroom, hands tensing and flexing. Chakotay had just made it to the entrance when he heard the whoosh of his bathroom door and quickly turned toward it. Steam slowly wafted out, but he could see the entire silhouette of the person within.
