The words were out, and Steve’s brain took a minute too long to realize that maybe, maybe the venom on them had been too much for some random evening that was supposed to be fun.

Tommy will get to hold his kid until he grows too big, and then set him down one day and not realize it was the last until way down the road. And even then, he’ll have the opportunity to still gather his son in his arms because Joel will make sure of it.
The same way that he’ll make sure that Ellie will always get a hug before leaving the house or a kiss on her temple before bed.
It’s then that Joel feels a gear stop turning in his head, thoughts redirected to a place that halts him in his tracks.
