In one of the rare instances in which his father had talked to Ed instead of in his general direction, he had said that there were hundreds of souls in his body. He had said it with the same certainty that one might say the sky was blue and the grass was green. Mom never acted like it was unusual, so Ed figured it was okay.

I decide to, once again, project my mental illnesses on Edward. Edward does not have a good time. Everyone does their best to help, but understanding is limited and stigma is high. Basically, Hohenheim's body is home to hundreds of souls and I took that literally.

Summary
People always assume that because Ed isn't religious, he doesn't believe in a higher power. He supposes it's a fair assumption, because that's how it goes with most alchemists; scientific minds don't usually like the wishy-washy nature of miracles and faith and unseen beings. They believe in atoms and molecules and the ever-elusive natural providence.
But Ed does believe in a higher power; he's met it, and its name is equivalent exchange. Nothing wishy-washy about that.
