Summary
They learn of what happened in the same way: secondhand, delayed - the event already in the past by the time it reached them.
Or - Grace and Colt both learn of what happened to the other through news broadcasts, too far away to do anything about it.

Bookmarker's Notes
Colt had been meaning to respond, because there had always been more time. They had spent the better part of a decade becoming strangers who still loved each other, and then his accident had drawn them together again. After the accident they had started texting more, calling once a week, planning visits, getting to know the new versions of each other and their adult lives - and then Ryland's involvement in the Project had quietly started the process again, and Colt had told himself not again, not this time, that they had already proven they could find each other.
Colt had told himself that it would be okay, because the launch was happening today and once it was over they could go back to staying in routine contact.
They were supposed to have had more time.

Summary
All it takes to prevent tragedy is a cat.
Preposterous, maybe, but nonetheless true.
Helaena is eight and he freshly seven, tooth faced and smiling. It’s his nameday, and yet he gives the small, black kitten to her. Many people think black cats bring bad luck, she knows it, and she cries over it, despite how Aegon teases her.
When he presents the small kitten to her, she can’t help but fluster and beam. The kitten captures her heart already.
“For you, Helaena,” Jace breathes. “I know how you love animals.”
Or: Helaena and Jace fall in love and stop a war.

Bookmarker's Notes
She’d drawn it on a whim. She knows that knights ask for a lady’s favour during tourneys. Knows that she can never do so with Jace; not now, not ever.
She drew a picture of Lemon instead, and a small wish of good luck in valyrian. She watches as he looks down at his hand when he returns to pick up his sword. Watches as he turns his head and looks right at her and smiles.
When he knocks Aegon into the dirt, she has to bite down on her cheek to stop herself from doing the same.

Summary
After the SQUIP Incident, Jeremy was forgiven. He should have been fine, his life had been balanced out. He had new friends, he regained his best friend, his dad was trying, he was doing well in school. Everything was okay. Everything was good.
Jeremy didn't deserve it. Jeremy wished he was dead.

Jeremy sighed. He was so tired. "Sure I didn't tell it to pull the trigger but I practically handed it the fucking gun. And you can't blame a computer for following its programming but you can blame me for fucking taking it in the first place. For not listening to you that night because I was so deluded into thinking that it was helping me. For not seeing anything wrong with how it was treating me when every threat and every shock and every suggestion to end my life became normal and expected."

Summary
It took two weeks for someone to finally take action and address the gray, oblong ghost of an elephant in the room. Jenna, who was usually the least invested in their lunchtime conversations, slammed her phone down on the lunch table and broke the tense silence that had befallen the SQUIP Squad.
“Alright, that’s it,” she snapped. “Who has at least heard from him since he got out of the hospital?”

Bookmarker's Notes
Rich's phone exploded with the MLG air horn sound effect. He and Jenna high-fived, laughing so hard that they almost fell from the bed. Michael laughed along with them, his laughter growing more violent with each blare of the air horn.
Jeremy could barely get a full sentence out, each verb and noun and adjective about how horrible he was punctuated with a trashy meme.
A faint smile tugged at his lips, and Michael considered that a victory.
