But the texture of the couch under her sweating palms scratched violently at something that had always been loose in Rumi’s mind. Something in her fingers clung to the ease of hiding next to these two women. Something wanted to howl but was so deeply buried all it could do was bite at its own flesh. Frustration was clawing at the back of the empty hollow feeling. Normally couch time helped. Normally the laughter started to fill her up again. It gave Rumi something to hold onto until she wasn’t drowning.

Mira and Zoey… They stood before her as she silently awaited her fate, but she had no idea what they were thinking. Disgust and fear, she assumed. It only made sense—she was a demon. They killed demons.
Finally, mercifully, her mind went quiet, and all that remained was dreadful, fearful anticipation.
The sound of faint, hesitant footsteps slowly but surely coming toward her broke her out of her mindless haze, and her entire body tensed.
“I can’t… I can’t…” someone was whispering, but it was so quiet that Rumi couldn’t be sure it wasn’t just her imagination.
Then, something heavy hit the ground with a thud and a clank. Had Mira dropped her gok-do?
“Rumi… what are you asking us to do?” Zoey’s voice was unfairly soft.
Rumi only squeezed her eyes shut tighter.

Zoey nearly chokes on water mid-swallow. Her head shoots up to look at the black haired boy. “No, wait, I was kidding! You are my best friend. My best friend in the world who needs to tell me everything right now.”
Zoey briefly laments how predictable she is. Her crush on Princess Mira is not a very well kept secret.
Jinu smirks. “The king posted a decree an hour ago. His daughter’s hand in marriage is to go to whomever slays the dragon up at Honmoon Peak, along with a title and a considerable sum of land.”

Summary
Before Valentina Ortiz left for college, she kissed her best friend Riley Andersen on the cheek and told her to keep in touch. She hoped the gesture would be the start of something special, so that the next time she returned home, something special may blossom into something real.
