So he pushed Adrian away, time and time again, because Adrian made him feel good—good about himself, good about life, good about the world—and Chris didn’t deserve it. He didn’t deserve Vigilante’s devotion.

    Eagly squawked gently, but Chris barely heard it as all the blood rushed to his head. Adrian just stared, face characteristically blank, offering no further explanation.
